Final challenge instructions

➤ Work on your final challenge

Might be a good idea to get started! Your translation is due on Monday May 15 and translator’s note is due Wednesday May 17.

If you’re still unsure what you want to do, or are not sure which specific text to pick, just message me on WeChat and I can help you.

Homework due MONDAY after vacation AT MIDNIGHT

➤ retranslate a passage from Dillard or ser serpas art criticism

Pick a short passage (about a paragraph or so) from Annie Dillard’s “Stunt Pilot” or the review of Ser Serpas’s artwork and retranslate it so that it’s more interesting—striking, original, poetic, mysterious. Try to write sentences that are understandable on a basic level but also have many interesting facets of meaning, so that the reader might be interested in lingering over those sentences, rereading them several time to appreciate their meaning on a deeper level.

Upload your new translations to Sakai by midnight (China time) the Monday after vacation.

Homework due TUESDAY before class

➤ Complete Worksheet 2E

Complete the worksheet for Challenge 2E. (Actually do the worksheet, don’t just think about it. Upload your version to the folder “15-Challenge 2E worksheet.”

➤ retranslate a passage from cHALLENGE 2a

Pick a short passage (5-6 sentences’ worth of text) from the Bacheng tourism pamphlet and retranslate it in a style more appropriate for the genre of advertising.

Before you do so, please study the parallel texts I’ve provided here and observe the kinds of conventional language (word choice, sentence patterns, etc.) typical of the style of this genre of writing in English. (Most of these examples are from the websites of tourism departments of major cities. You can click on the links and browse the websites to read even more examples.)

You might also want to revisit the advertising slogans we looked at at the beginning of the session. Notice particularly the kind of language used when the advertisement addresses the reader.

Upload your retranslations to the folder “Retranslations of Bacheng tourism pamphlet” on SharePoint.

➤ Read Han Dong poem, prepare to discuss

Read the poem by 韩东 called 《致某人或一个时代》and think about images and metaphors. What images do you see in your mind as you read this poem? What scenes do you imagine? Come ready to talk about the poem in preparation for translating it into English.
