EAP101B - Essay 2

In Drive, Daniel Pink argues that extrinsic motivators—rewards and punishments—often extinguish people's intrinsic motivation and result in a host of other negative effects, both for individuals and for society.

Choose one of Pink's points that you find especially interesting and explain how it relates to a situation or activity you know well. (What about language learning, for example? Or some other aspect of education?) Does what you've observed or experienced about that situation or activity support Pink's theory, contradict it, or both? What conclusions does this lead you to draw about this situation or activity—and/or about Pink's theory?

Three friendly reminders:

  • Describe things before you comment on them

  • Have a specific focus

  • Remember what you wrote in Essay 1: Try to do well the thing that you said you wanted your essays to do. Strive toward your own ideal of good writing.
