Austin's Rules of Thumb

When summarizing ideas, follow the logic of the ideas, not the order in which they appeared.

The best way to convey an author’s ideas is not necessarily the order in which the author talked about them. “Digest” the ideas yourself and explain them in the order that makes sense to you.

Don’t:

  • Write summaries that sound like a small child telling a story: “First she said … then she said… then she said… then she said…” etc.
