Austin's Rules of Thumb

Think from the reader's perspective.

How you write depends a lot on who you are writing for. Imagine your reader and think about what they already know, and what they don’t know. Think about what they would be interested in hearing—and what they would find boring and irrelevant.

Don’t:

  • confuse the reader by using words they wouldn’t understand, such as technical jargon

  • bore the reader by mentioning information they wouldn’t care about.
