EAP101B Fall 2020

Day 2

Thurs. Oct. 29

  • Summaries of Oyserman, HTLL Chapter 2

  • Intro to the idea of a “language-learning practice”

Homework

➤ Sign up for a 1-on-1 appointment with me

I will circulate a sign-up sheet via WeChat. Please choose a time to come meet me to talk about designing your independent language-learning plan.

➤ English learner interview project

Please read the instructions carefully! The classmate you’ll be interviewing is the one you began talking to in class about their English-learning habits.

➤ Read HTLL Chapters 9 and 10

Notes and questions to guide your reading:

Chapter 9: Please focus your reading on the sections about the "intermediate stage” and the “advanced stage.” Be asking yourself: Which stage do I think I’m in — intermediate or advanced?

Chapter 10: Be asking yourself: What long-term goals should I be working toward now as an English learner? Try to be able to state them as specifically as possible — what exactly do you want to be able to do in English?

  • Yang Xinyi: Summarize Chapter 9, focusing on the parts about the intermediate and advanced stages of language learning.

  • Wu You: Summarize Chapter 10

➤ Calculate days & weeks

A little math problem for you. Please calculate:

  • the number of days till the end of Session 2

  • the number of days and weeks till the end of your freshman year

  • the number of weeks till you graduate from college
